In particular, Sashi Bake and Surikomi Bake used in Yuzen Dyeing and Bingata are preferred by traditional craftsmen and artisans in various regions. Menso Fude and Sokumyo, which can be used for fine lines and coloring, are used for painting ceramics, Japanese dolls, lanterns, and other crafts throughout Japan.
Sashi-Bake(差指刷毛)
These brushes are flat brushes for applying color to dyed products. Made of carefully selected horsehair, this flat brush combines smooth writing with strength. This is a professional brush used by dyeing artisans in various traditional crafts as well as hand-painted yuzen. It is also used to draw patterns on lanterns, a traditional Japanese craft.
Surikomi-Bake(スリ込刷毛)
This brush is used for stencil dyeing. Horsehair and deerhair are used, and there are two types: a hard brush (Kuro - black type) and a soft brush (Aka - red type). They are used according to the technique and purpose of stencil dyeing, such as kata-yuzen and bingata. It can also be used for blurring in Japanese-style painting. These are professional brushes used by traditional Japanese craftsmen.
Sokumyo(則妙)
This brush is a type of Senbyo-Fude (line drawing brush). This brush is made almost entirely of soft goat hair, which allows it to hold water well and produce soft lines. It is a favorite brush for line drawing, coloring, and blurring in Japanese painting.
Nyosui(如水)
This brush is a type of Tsuketate-Fude. This brush is made almost entirely of soft goat hair, which is well absorbed by water and produces soft lines. This brush is often used for ink painting, but it is also a favorite brush for line drawing, coloring, and blurring in Japanese painting.
Saishiki-Fude(彩色筆)
This brush is used to apply paint for Japanese-style painting. This brush is also used for Koroku Tensai, in which colors are applied inside the contour lines. It is recommended as a paint brush for watercolor painting as well as for Japanese paints such as iwa-enogu (mineral pigments). It can also be used for various purposes such as painting ceramics.
Menso-Fude(面相筆)
This brush is a type of Senbyo-Fude (line drawing brush). This brush is used for Japanese-style painting and ink painting when detailed drawing of people and animals is required. It is made of weasel hair or other bristles with fine tips that are very thin and sharp. It is also suitable for detailed coloring and pattern drawing of crafts such as ceramic painting and maki-e (gold-relief lacquering).
Kindei-Fude(金泥筆)
This brush is a type of Senbyo-Fude (line drawing brush). It is made of raccoon dog hair and has elasticity from the tip to the middle of the brush, making it suitable for drawing lines with sticky gold or silver (white) mud. It is used for drawing gold lines on Japanese paintings and crafts.
Hakkei(白圭)
This brush is a type of Senbyo-Fude (line drawing brush) made of Shirotamage (white cat hair). The tip of the hair has a unique elasticity and is suitable for line drawing, coloring details, and dotting. It is used for painting Japanese-style paintings and ceramics.
Sakuyo-Fude(削用筆)
This brush is a type of Senbyo-Fude (line drawing brush). It is made of weasel hair or other hairs with good quality tips. The brush is thick from the middle to the base and has good water retention ability, while the brush tip is thin, so it can continue to draw lines. It is a versatile brush that can be used for everything from fine to bold lines, and even as a coloring brush.
Poster-Fude(ポスター筆)
This brush is a flat brush made of goat hair. This flat brush has a softer drawing feel than nylon flat brushes. In addition to its use in Japanese painting, it is suitable for posters and other designs, and for decorating letters such as Gothic typefaces.
Rouketsu-Fude/Etsuke-fude(ローケツ筆/絵付筆)
This brush is used for batik (batik dyeing), in which melted wax is applied to cloth. The brush is designed so that the wax does not drip off and stays on the tip of the brush. It can also be used as a brush for making Dami (濃み/ダミ) when painting with Gosu.
Bokashi-Fude(ボカシ筆)
The brush is made of stiff bristles. By rubbing the brush with paint and rubbing it with the Bokashi Ami, the paint can be scattered and blurred beautifully. Also called Tataki Fude, this brush is used in the Sunago technique of scattering gold leaf in Japanese paintings, for example, by rubbing or tapping the gold leaf in the Sunago Dutsu with this brush to scatter the gold leaf finely. This brush is also used to blur previously applied paint and gold leaf by rubbing or tapping with this brush.
Kokutan-Bake(黒檀刷毛)
This brush is made of very hard deer hair, which we call Kurokoto. Because of its thin and hard bristles, it is used to paint beautiful grain patterns like ebony on tables and other wood crafts.It is also very useful as Kara-Bake(唐刷毛).
Hanga-Bake(版画刷毛)
This brush is used for woodblock prints. It is made of hard pig bristles and is used to spread paint over the entire surface of a woodblock print. The rounded tip makes it easy to spread paint from any angle.
